Williams F1 has announced a major driver change for the 2026 season, with Luke Browning joining the team as reserve driver. Browning, 23, will combine this role with competing in the Japanese Super Formula Championship with Team Kondo Racing. This move marks a significant step in Browning’s career, who recently secured a victory and eight podium finishes in the F2 standings, finishing fourth overall with Hitech GP.
Browning’s appointment comes after Williams parted ways with Franco Colapinto, who joined Alpine. The British driver has been part of the Williams F1 Driver Academy since 2023 and has already appeared in several F1 practice sessions. James Vowles, Williams Team Principal, praised Browning’s progress, saying, “It’s a proud moment to see Luke stepping into the Reserve Driver role from 2026”.
As reserve driver, Browning will support Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz, helping develop the team’s new car through data analysis and simulator work. Browning expressed his excitement, saying, “I’m incredibly excited to be stepping up as Reserve Driver with Atlassian Williams F1 Team this year”.
Browning’s Super Formula campaign will allow him to gain more on-track experience and continue his growth as a driver. Williams Sporting Director Sven Smeets added, “We’re pleased to confirm our Williams F1 Team Driver Academy line-up for this year and recognise the depth of talent progressing through the programme”.
The 2026 F1 season promises to be an exciting one, with Williams fielding a strong driver lineup. Browning’s appointment adds depth to the team, ensuring they’re well-prepared for the new regulations and challenges ahead.
