Max Verstappen managed to secure a remarkable personal achievement during the 2025 Formula 1 season, even though Red Bull faced difficulties early on and he ultimately missed out on the drivers’ championship. The Dutch driver finished the year with the highest number of laps led, underlining his continued influence at the front of the grid.
The season itself was one of the tightest in recent history when viewed through the lens of race leadership statistics. Verstappen and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri were locked in an incredibly close duel, with only a handful of laps separating them over the entire campaign.
In total, Verstappen led 454 laps across the season, narrowly edging out Piastri, who was just two laps behind on 452. The slim margin emphasised how fiercely contested the fight for on-track control was from race to race.
Piastri’s tally was particularly impressive given McLaren’s shared leadership dynamic, as he consistently matched strong performances alongside team-mate Lando Norris. His ability to remain at the front for long stretches highlighted McLaren’s overall competitiveness throughout the year.
Despite Red Bull not enjoying the same dominance as in previous seasons, Verstappen’s ability to accumulate the most laps led served as a reminder of his relentless pace and racecraft. Even without the title, the statistic reinforced his status as one of the defining figures of the 2025 campaign.
