Former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher has offered a blunt assessment of why Lando Norris may struggle to reach the same legendary status as Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton and other all-time greats. While Norris is widely admired for his talent, Schumacher believes something crucial is still missing.
Schumacher stressed that raw speed alone is not enough to define a truly historic F1 career. According to him, the very best drivers combine pace with an unshakable mentality that allows them to dominate across different seasons, regulations and competitive pressures.
He suggested that Verstappen and Hamilton possess an instinctive ruthlessness in wheel-to-wheel combat and decision-making that consistently separates them from the rest of the grid. This trait, Schumacher argued, is what elevates elite drivers into championship-defining figures.
In Norris’ case, Schumacher feels there have been moments where hesitation or inconsistency has crept in during critical phases of races and title fights. These small margins, he noted, are often the difference between winning races and building a legacy.
Despite the criticism, Schumacher acknowledged Norris’ immense potential and ongoing development. However, he maintained that unless Norris develops the same relentless edge shown by Verstappen and Hamilton, matching their historic achievements may remain out of reach.
