The Portland Fire are reportedly set to make a major move in their debut season by appointing Alex Sarama as the team’s first-ever head coach. According to a report from Front Office Sports, the WNBA expansion franchise plans to hire the current Cleveland Cavaliers assistant, marking a significant step in building the foundation of the new team.
The news first surfaced briefly on the Fire’s official LinkedIn page early Tuesday before being taken down. Despite the premature post, multiple reports have confirmed that Sarama is indeed the organization’s top choice to lead the expansion side, though his contract has not yet been finalized. The move underscores Portland’s commitment to securing a coach with both NBA and developmental experience.
Sarama joined the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2024 as the team’s director of player development and quickly rose through the ranks to become an assistant coach for the 2025–26 season. His focus on skill development and modern basketball principles has earned him a strong reputation within coaching circles, making him an appealing pick for a young franchise looking to establish its identity.
Before his time in Cleveland, the English-born coach already had ties to Portland through his work with the Rip City Remix, the Trail Blazers’ G League affiliate. There, he served as both an assistant coach and director of player development, giving him valuable familiarity with the city’s basketball culture and community.
If the hiring is finalized, Sarama’s appointment will mark the beginning of a new era for professional women’s basketball in Portland. His blend of international experience, developmental focus, and local connections could make him the ideal leader to guide the Fire as they prepare to make their long-awaited WNBA debut.
