Lando Norris has opened up about the thoughts running through his head during the closing laps of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, as he edged closer to securing his first Formula 1 drivers’ championship. The McLaren driver described the intense mental focus required as the season reached its dramatic conclusion.
At the Yas Marina Circuit, Norris found himself locked in a high-pressure battle with Max Verstappen and teammate Oscar Piastri. Although Verstappen went on to win the race, Norris’ third-place finish proved enough to clinch the title by a narrow two-point margin.
The championship fight had built steadily toward a tense finale under the floodlights in Abu Dhabi. While McLaren’s MCL39 had been the standout car for much of the season, Verstappen refused to fade from contention and forced the title fight to the very last moments.
Norris admitted that during the final two laps, his focus shifted between maintaining clean execution on track and managing the weight of what was at stake. With every corner, the reality of a lifelong ambition coming within reach became harder to ignore.
Crossing the line knowing he had done enough to become world champion marked an emotional release for Norris. The race capped a breakthrough season in which he combined speed, consistency and composure to finally reach the top of Formula 1.
