The Portland Trail Blazers reached the halfway point of their preseason with mixed injury updates, combining both positive developments and fresh concerns. While two rotation players, Robert Williams III and Matisse Thybulle, have started to increase their basketball activity after missing training camp, the team faces uncertainty over starter Toumani Camara, who is dealing with knee soreness. Camara’s availability for the next exhibition matchup against the Golden State Warriors remains in question.
Camara has been a regular starter during the exhibition games, logging significant minutes against the Warriors and the Sacramento Kings. However, during Friday’s game against Sacramento, he was spotted with a wrap around his right knee and did not return for the second half. Head coach Chauncey Billups confirmed that Camara’s knee was “a little sore” and that the team is taking a cautious approach, though he does not anticipate sidelining the young forward for the remainder of preseason.
The 23-year-old forward has emerged as a key part of the Blazers’ lineup thanks to his versatility, defense, and growing offensive confidence. In his limited preseason action, Camara has averaged 8.5 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists, while also displaying improved shooting touch, notably hitting four three-pointers in a single game against Golden State. His progress has made him an integral figure in the team’s evolving identity under Coach Billups.
Meanwhile, Williams and Thybulle — both recovering from extended absences — are slowly ramping up their workloads. Williams, who has battled recurring knee and hamstring issues, participated in half-court drills for the first time and continues his “return to competition reconditioning.” The team is taking a patient approach to ensure his long-term health, with no specific date set for his return. Thybulle is also easing back into full activity after knee soreness limited him last season, and while he has no firm timeline, Billups expressed satisfaction with his steady progress.
Despite the injuries, the Blazers remain optimistic about their roster depth and player development. Coach Billups emphasized that both Thybulle and Williams are trending upward in their recoveries, while Camara’s situation is being closely monitored. As the team continues its preseason, Portland’s focus remains on balancing player health with preparation for the regular season.
