Mercedes has marked the close of a landmark chapter in Formula 1 by unveiling the power unit that defined its dominance in the turbo-hybrid era. The celebration highlighted just how central its engine programme was to shaping a decade of success.
From the introduction of the turbo-hybrid regulations in 2014, Mercedes set the standard with its power units, beginning with the formidable W05. That engine laid the foundation for a period of supremacy few teams have ever matched in the sport.
To commemorate the occasion, Mercedes High Performance Powertrains showcased its most iconic engines at its Brixworth headquarters. The display served as a tribute to the engineering excellence that powered the team to the top of Formula 1.
Reserve driver Frederik Vesti added to the celebrations by giving staff a special demonstration run. He drove both the legendary 2014 W05 and the latest W16, symbolically linking the beginning and end of an extraordinary era for Mercedes.
The event underlined how crucial the power unit was to Mercedes’ sustained success. Across the turbo-hybrid era, the team captured seven consecutive Drivers’ Championships and eight straight Constructors’ titles, with engine performance playing a decisive role throughout.
